By Haaretz Service

Rescue services discovered the lifeless body of a motorcyclist along Highway 22 near the fuel storage facilities in Haifa Bay early Saturday, Israel Radio reported. Police are attempting to ascertain the identity of the motorist, whose body is undergoing forensic examination.

Investigators at the scene believe the driver of the motorcycle accelerated to an excessive speed, and the vehicle overturned, according to Israel Radio.

Also late Friday, a road accident in Daliat al Carmel claimed the life of Ihab Abu Hamud, 21, and left a passenger in the car moderately hurt, Israel Radio reported.

Police say Abu Hamud was apparently speeding and subsequently lost control of his vehicle, according to Israel Radio. Abu Hamud's car veered onto the walkway on the side of the road and crashed into a pole, Israel Radio reported. A passenger in the car suffered moderate injuries, and is currently receiving treatment at Rambam Hospital in Haifa.

Police reported levying 1,150 fines and penalties to drivers on the roads throughout the country late Friday and into Saturday, Israel Radio said. Seventy-one drivers were found with excessive alcohol levels in their blood and 41 motorists' licenses were confiscated due to speeding. Authorities impounded more than 70 vehicles police say failed to meet the requisite safety standards, according to Israel Radio.
