Abe Foxman, Director of the Anti-Defamation League

Abe Foxman, the National Director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for the last 20 years, was a guest of Haaretz Q&A on Thursday, February 21, 2008. Many thanks to thousands of readers who took part in this live event.

Foxman recently praised U.S. Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama for his letter to the UN urging condemnation of the rocket attacks on Sderot. Foxman also wrote to Republican contender Mike Huckabee expressing concern over his declaration that he is a "Christian leader," rather than the leader of "all Americans."

In his recent book, "In The Deadliest Lies: The Israel Lobby and The Myth of Jewish Control," Foxman aimed to disprove the claims by U.S. professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, whose 2007 book asserts that a pro-Israel lobby is directing American foreign policy to benefit the Jewish state, rather than the U.S.

Born in Poland in 1940, Foxman was saved from the Holocaust by his Catholic nurse, who raised him as a Catholic. He has gained recognition for his work on the Holocaust, and warned that the recent anti-Semitic church service in Krakow proved that the "lessons of the Holocaust... [are] fading for ordinary Poles."
