Mauritania releases 8 detained after Israeli embassy attack

By The Associated Press

Mauritanian authorities have released eight people who had been detained in connection with an attack this month on the Israel Embassy in the northwest Africa country, officials said Monday.

Seven of the detainees, including two Tunisian citizens, were held for 10 days and interrogated before being released Monday for lack of proof, judge Ould Moustapha said. An eighth person was released last week shortly after his arrest, also because there was not enough evidence to hold him. Al-Qaida in Islamic North Africa claimed responsibility for the Feb. 1 shooting attack.
