Cellcom to launch on-board phone, Web functions on Air France flights

By Eran Gabay, TheMarker

Beginning Monday, Cellcom customers will be able to send text messages and surf the Web from their mobile phones on certain Air France flights.

A spokesman for the company said that a recent agreement between Cellcom and Swiss cellular provider On Air will allow Cellcom customers to send and receive SMS and MMS messages and to surf the Internet. They will need to use cellular WAP or surfing services on their laptop computers.

Within about three months in-flight telephone calls will be enabled. Cellcom says service will be launched on Air France flights to several European destinations at first. Other airlines, such as Air Asia, will be brought in later.

Partner (which operates under the Orange brand name) has plans to introduce a similar service shortly.

The company says it will announce the costs for in-flight Internet access, which are not included in Cellcom's Internet surfing package, in the near future.
