Beita Israel: A photographic journey from Ethiopia to Israel

Haaretz.com TV special feature on Ethiopian immigrants to Israel.

By Uriel Sinai, Ayanawo Farada Sanbetu and Haaretz Staff

Over 75,000 people immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia since 1948. More than half of them arrived in Israel in the past 15 years.

Following a long journey that took them from their home villages to a waiting camp in Gondar, an emigration facility in Addis Ababa, and an immigration absorption camp in Israel, they arrived in their new homes in Israel.

Haaretz photographer Uriel Sinai traveled to Ethiopia and back, in order to document the different steps of the journey, offering a visual glance into both the excitement and the difficulties facing Ethiopian immigrants.

Accompanying Sinai's photographs is music by Ras Deshen Ensemble, an Israeli-Ethiopian musical duo featuring Yitzhak Yedid on piano and Abatte Berihun on vocals and saxophone.
