Five cars destroyed by Qassam rocket attack on city of Sderot

By Mijal Grinberg, Haaretz Correspondent

A Qassam rocket fired from the Gaza Strip set fire to five cars on a Sderot street Saturday morning.

Firefighters were called to the scene and managed to put out the fire, but the cars were completely destroyed. "We haven't before seen such damage caused by a Qassam," said Moshe Omer, spokesman for the Lachish region fire department.

Another rocket was fired at the western Negev later Saturday, but no damage was caused.

Israel Defense Forces troops opened fire Thursday on a car carrying militants in the northern Gaza Strip, killing two and injuring five, Palestinian sources said.

The attack on Beit Hanun came after Palestinian militants fired three rockets and two mortar shells on Sderot. One of the rockets caused extensive damage to a house and vehicles. Two people were treated for shock.

The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks.
