World's Jewish communities to rally for kidnapped IDF soldiersBy Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent Jewish communities worldwide will hold prayer vigils for Israel's three kidnapped soldiers on Tuesday as part of a World Solidarity Day, slated to be the largest solidarity event for the three to date. Dozens of solidarity demonstrations for Ehud Goldwasser, Eldad Regev and Gilad Shalit are planned for around the world as part of this special event. Thousands of students in the United States, Chile, Venezuela, the Netherlands, France, Ukraine, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Uruguay will hold rallies. Goldwasser's wife Karnit will speak in a live broadcast from Jewish Agency headquarters in Jerusalem; her words will be transmitted by video link to rallies worldwide. Corporal Gilad Shalit was snatched from his army base near the Gaza Strip in a cross-border attack by Palestinian militants in June 2006. Less than a month later, reservists Goldwasser and Regev were captured by Hezbollah fighters as they patrolled the Israeli side of the frontier with Lebanon. The assault sparked the Second Lebanon War, a 34-day conflict in which more than 130 Israelis and 1,000 Lebanese were killed. More Jewish World news and features |
