Two Islamic Jihad militants killed, one IDF officer hurt in Jenin raidBy Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent Two Islamic Jihad militants were killed by Israel Defense Forces fire during a raid in the West Bank city of Jenin early Tuesday. Israel Radio reported that an IDF officer was lightly wounded in the fighting. Also Tuesday, Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fired two Qassam rockets at Israel. The rockets struck near in open areas adjacent to western Negev kibbutzim, causing no damage or injuries. The IDF said Tuesday morning that 15 Qassam rockets had been fired at Israel in the previous 24 hours. The Palestinian militants were killed in a Jenin gun battle that erupted when the two attempted to escape from a house that had been surrounded by troops from the elite Duvdevan undercover unit in the Sabah el-Kheir neighborhood. One of the two killed was 43-year-old Khaled Reik, a senior leader in the military wing of Islamic Jihad in the northern West Bank. He was believed to have taken part in the planning of several terrorist attacks, including a failed shooting attack outside Tul Karm in July. The second killed was named as Mahmoud Jawabreh, Reik's assistant. An additional six wanted Palestinian militants were arrested by the reconnaissance unit of the Nahal infantry brigade in Jenin on Tuesday. Related articles: |
