Mazuz requested to disqualify state prosecutor candidateBy Yuval Yoaz, Haaretz Correspondent MK Shelly Yachimovich (Labor) and MK Arieh Eldad (National Union) have asked Attorney General Menachem Mazuz and members of the search committee for the next state prosecutor to disqualify attorney Eitan Maoz from a candidacy for the post. Maoz is currently with the law firm of M. Seligman, whose attorneys are handling the criminal allegations against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. The idea that an attorney representing the prime minister would be the one to eventually make decisions when it comes to suspicions against the prime minister in matters being handled by his law partner is "bizarre," the two lawmakers wrote to Mazuz yesterday. "Maoz's unacceptable candidacy seems to an outside observer as another attempt by the prime minister to strike at the power of the systems of government and law in Israel, whether by unbridged attacks or by improper appointments, all in order to save his skin," wrote Yachimovich and Eldad, who are active in a parliamentary lobby against corruption in public life. "We are certain that you will reject outright another attempt of this nature, both for its germane reasons and for appearances' sake," the MKs added. |
