One man killed and six hurt in fire in Nahariya retirement home

By Haaretz Service

A man in his 60s was killed, and six others were lightly injured as a fire erupted at a retirement home in Nahariya early Sunday.

The fire was apparently sparked by a cigarette forgotten on a bed by one of the residents of the home.

The home belongs to the family of the Daniel Sharon, who was arrested in an unrelated incident in Lebanon last week.

Firefighters evacuated everyone from the building upon arriving at the scene. The structure sustained extensive damage before firefighters were able to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters first received a report of the fire at around 3 a.m. Sunday morning. A search of the site revealed one man's body. Western Galilee Fire Department spokesman Amir Levy said that the cause of the fire is under investigation, but the evidence suggests that the fire originated in the room where the dead body was found, and was not intentional.

Police officers questioned manager Moshe Sharon, as well as several employees. Sharon is a known businessman in Nahariya, and part owner of the retirement home.
