Two men suspected of running over, beating, robbing 81-year-oldBy Mijal Grinberg, Haaretz Correspondent 81-year-old Zinayida Peshayev was intentionally run over after stepping off a city bus in Ashkelon on Thursday, and was then brutally beaten and robbed. The perpetrators, two young men, allegedly drove a car into the victim and then exited the vehicle and proceeded to beat her. The suspects then robbed NIS 2,000 from Peshayev, who said she was in the habit of carrying her cash on her person because she feared that her son, a drug addict, would try to take the money. The two were arrested, and their remand has been extended by six days. The elderly woman was in moderate condition when she arrived at the Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, and was later transferred to Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva. Hospital officials reported that she had suffered head injuries. The two alleged attackers, Ofakim residents aged 19 and 26, fled the scene following the robbery, but were captured early Friday morning. They admitted to the crimes attributed to them during questioning. The money was recovered at the home of one of the two suspects. |
