Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi to present Lebanon war medalsBy Yuval Azoulay, Haaretz Correspondent Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi will present medals and citations for service in the Second Lebanon War at a ceremony Sunday night at Tel Aviv's Mann Auditorium. Six soldiers will receive the Medal of Valor, 12 will receive the Distinguished Service Medal and 17 will receive Citations. In addition, three army units will be awarded Citations. Over the next few weeks, an additional 105 medals will be awarded by various commands, including five unit citations. The recipients of the chief of staff awards were decided by a committee chaired by Maj.-Gen. Yishai Bar, based on a list composed by the General Staff Committee for Medals and Citations. Among the recipients of the chief of staff medals are those who participated in the first battle of Bint Jbail on July 26, 2006, in which eight soldiers from Battalion 51 of the Golani Brigade died. |
