IDF asks police to handle possible probe against senior officer

By Yuval Azoulay, Haaretz Correspondent

The Israel Defense Forces Military Advocate General (MAG), Brigadier General Avihai Mandelblit, on Thursday asked State Prosecutor Eran Shendar to handle an investigation against a senior officer suspected of unethical behavior.

Mandelblit requested civilian police weigh allegations against Brigadier General Roni Beni because of fears procedures may be affected by his position as head of the military police, the body usually charged with army internal investigations.

According to a report that appeared in Israeli media earlier Thursday, Beni allegedly slept in bed and breakfasts without paying during the Second Lebanon War.

"Following a complaint filed with military authorities, the MAG asked the State Prosecution to instruct police to determine whether or not to probe the complaint and, if necessary, to carry out an investigation," an IDF spokesperson said.
