PM names ex-Navy official Horev to head Atomic Energy Commission

By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Thursday named Doctor Shaul Horev as the next managing-director of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission (IAEC).

The former Israel Navy deputy chief has in the past filled-in as temporary chairman of the IAEC and in his last capacity headed a secret agency within the Ministry of Defense.

He will be replacing Gideon Frank, a senior expert in the field of atomic energy who held on to the position for over 15 years.

Frank is held in high regard among international atomic agencies, including the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The IAEC is a governmental body in charge of atomic research in Israel and its reactors in Dimona and Sorek. In addition, the committee is in charge of formulating national policy on atomic issues, and is represented in the UN by a member.
