Dehydrated Golan hiker rescued as scorcher enters fourth day

By Tamara Traubman, Haaretz Correspondent and Haaretz Service

A rescue team evacuated on Saturday a dehydrated hiker from the Golan Heights' Yehudiyah River as temperatures across the country continued to soar for the fourth consecutive day.

Meteorologists said the higher than average temperatures felt across the country since Wednesday were caused by a low front over the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

The heat wave, however, will not break any records and is normal for the season, meteorologist Nahum Melnik said.

In the coastal city of Tel Aviv 32 degrees Celsius (89.6 Fahrenheit) with an 80% humidity level were measured Friday while temperatures in the mountainous regions around Safed and in the Golan Heights almost reached the 40s (104 Fahrenheit.)

The heat wave is expected to assuage on Sunday and Monday, but temperatures will continue to be higher than usual.
