Police arrest 18-year-old suspected of raping, beating 50-year-old woman

By Eli Ashkenazi, Haaretz Correspondent

Afula Police on Sunday arrested an 18-year-old man suspected of raping a 50-year-old woman from a community near the northern town Saturday night.

The teen allegedly broke into the woman's home while she was asleep, and then tied her up. He then allegedly sexually assaulted and raped her.

Police said the complainant could not easily identify the 18-year-old, so "with incredible self-restraint appealed to him, and began to converse with him in order to learn his identity."

During their conversation the 18-year-old untied the woman. When they had finished speaking he took several hundred shekels from her wallet and then left, she said.

The woman called the community security officer, and based on her description police managed to arrest the suspect not far from her house.

They subsequently discovered the suspect had once lived in the same community as the woman.

Police questioned the 18-year-old, and will soon ask Nazareth Magistrate's Court to extend his remand.
