By Roni Singer-Heruti, Haaretz Correspondent

A woman was killed and four others were injured, two seriously, after a fire broke out Friday in an apartment on Mattalon Street in south Tel Aviv.

The cause for the blaze is being investigated.

The fire started in an apartment inhabited by foreign workers on the first floor of the building. Teams of firefighters arrived to the scene and rescued those trapped in the apartment.

One of the firefighters said that "the firefighters endangered their lives in order to rescue the injured from the apartment which was going up in flames."

The firefighters were able to rescue five people from the apartment, one in critical condition, two others in serious condition, and another two moderately injured.

MDA teams which arrived at the blaze performed CPR, but without success. The rest of the injured were taken to Sheba Medical Center and Ichilov Hospital for medical assistance.

Police also came to the site of the fire, and opened an investigation to reveal the causes of the fire.

In a separate fire, four people were treated for smoke inhalation after a blaze broke out in their apartment building on Yehezkel Street in Jerusalem.

In a fire near the industrial area of Kiryat Shmona, a locksmith's workshop was burned down. In a blaze that raged near Abu Ghosh and Beit Shemesh, airplanes were flown in to put out the flames.
