Ceremony marks 25th anniversary of attack on Israeli envoy to U.K.By Haaretz Service Prominent Jewish and Israeli officials on Monday attended a London ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the attempted assassination by Palestinian gunmen of Israel's then ambassador to Britain, Shlomo Argov. The ceremony, held outside the Dorchester hotel where Palestinian militants opened fire on Argov in 1982, was attended by Rabbi Abraham Levy, Lord Levy, Israeli Ambassador to the U.K. Zvi Heifetz and Sir Malcolm Rifkind. A wreath was laid in honor of Argov, who was seriously wounded in the attack and remained hospitalized until his death in 2003. The shooting was one of the main causes for the outbreak of the First Lebanon War. |
