Judges say will not boycott annual Israel Bar Association meeting

By Yuval Yoaz, Haaretz Correspondent

Judge Varda Alshech announced Thursday that judges will not boycott the annual Israel Bar Association (ISBA) meeting that will take place next week in Eilat.

Alshech informed ISBA president Shlomo Cohen of the decision.

There has been recent tension in relations between the sides due to the ISBA's pushing for the quick signing of a "document of understanding." This will determine procedures for a questionnaire that has been instituted in place of feedback as a means of inspecting judges. The disagreement stemmed from the degree to which the questions in the questionnaire were personal, and how its findings were publicized.

Alshech, chair of the judicial ombudsman wrote in a letter she distributed: "In light of Shlomo Cohen's last letter, there is no obstacle to our participating in the Eilat conference."

During the meeting Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch is scheduled to speak, as is retired president Aharon Barak, deputy president Eliezer Rivlin and many judges from all areas of the judicial system.
