Suspect killed, policeman seriously wounded in Ramat Gan shootoutBy Roni Singer-Haruti, Haaretz Correspondent and Haaretz Service A man was killed and a police officer seriously wounded on Sunday in a shootout in the city of Ramat Gan, just east of Tel Aviv. Police suspect the man shot to death was part of a hit squad sent by the Abergill crime family to assassinate a member of their long-time rivals, the Alperons. Gunfire erupted after plain-clothes police tried to stop a vehicle they had been following, driven by suspected criminals. They formed a road block at the corner of Abba Hillel and Rokach streets, at which point the suspect opened fire on them. Police identified themselves by wearing police-issued hats and returned fire, killing the man. Two other passengers were unhurt and promptly arrested. |
