Olmert: Gov't to invest NIS 100 million in renovating bomb sheltersBy Jack Houri, Haaretz Correspondent Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said during a meeting with Carmiel Mayor Adi Eldar on Monday that The government will allocate NIS 100 million toward renovating bomb shelters in the north of the country. According to Olmert, the renovated bomb shelters should be ready within nine months. Olmert also said that the residents of the north feel more secure these days because Hezbollah has been pushed back from the border. The Prime Minister's announcement comes two weeks after the Finance Ministry notified the Defense Ministry that it would only allocate NIS 63 million toward fortifying the home front. The Defense Ministry has said that the fortification would cost NIS 1.4 billion, but only requested NIS 390 million in a report submitted to Olmert. |
