Some secondary school teachers to halt strike Wednesday

The Association of Secondary Schools Teachers said Tuesday that 9th to 12th grade classes in secondary schools will resume as usual Wednesday, to allow schools to prepare for Memorial Day ceremonies.
It has not yet decided, however, whether studies will be in session Thursday.
The National Labor Court acceded Monday night to a Ministry of Education request for an injunction preventing secondary school teachers from striking.
The court demanded that teachers end the strike as it caused the cancellation of matriculation exams, as well as preparatory lessons. The court did not ban the teachers from striking in regards to studies unrelated to matriculation exams.
The strike began after a delay in negotiations over compensation for a drop in salary implemented between 1999 and 2001.
Due to the protest, a number of secondary schools were forced to cancel oral English matriculation exams that should have taken place Monday.
The exams have no set nationwide date, as every school determines the date of the exam according to its own schedule. The remaining exams will begin on May 2, the first of which will be in biology.
