IDF to spend NIS 2 billion to upgrade emergency supply unitsBy Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent The Israel Defense Forces will invest NIS 2 billion over the next 5 years in upgrading its emergency supply units, Head of the Technology and Logistics Directorate, Major General Avi Mizrahi, said on Tuesday. During a press conference, Mizrahi revealed the findings of a committee that investigated the army's logistical response in the recent Lebanon war. The committee's main conclusion was that army units were ill-equipped during the war because of difficulties transporting supplies to the front, and not because of stockpile shortages. The IDF's top brass believe that had guidelines been in place relating to organizing supply convoys then the equipment would have reached the front on time. In addition, medical supplies were low during the war because of the army's low appraisal that a war would break out. During the war the IDF invested NIS 25 million to buy medical supplies in Israel and abroad to answer demand. |
