Abdullah calls for increased U.S. involvement in Mideast peace process

By Haaretz Service

Jordan's King Abdullah called for increased United States involvement in Middle East peace efforts Wednesday, saying until peace is found "we are all at risk."

"The people of the Middle East are searching for new hope," added Abdullah, during an address to the U.S. Congress.

The Jordanian king said that all major breakthroughs in the peace process came during periods in which the U.S. had decided to take an active role.

"There are those who say it is not our business," he said. "But this congress knows there are no bystanders in the 21st century."

"No Palestinian father should be helpless to feed his family," said Abdullah. "No Israel mother should fear when her child boards a bus."

The Jordanian king also addressed the relations between the U.S. and Arab world, saying the time had come for a "different legacy."
