Israel to complain to UN after six mines thrown from Syria found in Golan HeightsBy The Associated Press Israel will file a complaint with the United Nations forces in Syria after six mines thrown from Syria were found in the southern Golan Heights, the Israel Defense Forces said Sunday. The unexploded mines were found Saturday on a border road north of Hamat Gader spa, the IDF spokesman said. Four more were observed on the Syrian side of the border, the spokesman said. Israel will complain to the UN forces as they are supposed to keep all persons on the Syrian side away from the border, the IDF spokesman said. Israel captured the Golan Heights in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed the area in 1981. Syria has in past peace talks demanded the return of the territory. The border between the two countries is generally quiet, even following Israel's 34-day war this summer against the Syrian-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. Related articles: |
