UN Secretary General calls Holocaust deniers 'misguided individuals'By DPA As the United Nations prepares a second international day to remember the victims of the Holocaust, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warned Friday against new outbreaks of anti-Semitism and those who deny the massacre of 6 million Jews more than 60 years ago. The UN General Assembly has set January 27 as International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. The first commemoration was held last year, decades after the end of World War II. Ban said in a statement that the world should remain vigilant against anti-Semitism and other forms of intolerance as "an essential response to those misguided individuals who claim that the Holocaust never happened, or has been exaggerated." "The International Day is thus a day on which we must reassert our commitment to human rights," he said. "That cause was brutally desecrated at Auschwitz and by genocides and atrocities since." |
