Two killed, 5 injured in separate shooting incidents in south

By Mijal Grinberg, Haaretz Correspondent

Two people were killed and five injured, one seriously, in two separate shooting incidents in the south on Friday night.

A man was shot and killed when he tried to break into Shai Farms in the Negev. The farm owner told police that four men arrived at the farm, poisoned one of the dogs, and broke a lock on an animal pen.

The man told police he fired his gun in an attempt to scare the men off. Two of the burglars escaped and two others were wounded, one seriously and one lightly.

The owner maintains that when he realized that one of the burglars was seriously injured, he tried resuscitating him. The attempts failed, however, and the man died shortly after. The farm owner was detained for further questioning.

In the other incident, a 40-year-old Arad resident was arrested on suspicion that he fired the shots which killed a man at the "Manhattan" nightclub in the southern city, when a skirmish broke out between club-goers around 1 A.M.

The man, who also works as a security guard, allegedly pulled out his personal weapon and fired. One person was seriously wounded, and died shortly after. Three others were lightly wounded.

The suspect was arrested and taken for further questioning and the nightclub was shut down for 30 days by police.
