Three Israeli backpackers reported missing in remote Chilean park

Chilean authorities authorities temporarily called off their search for three Israeli backpackers reported as missing in Puyehue national park citing bad weather conditions, the Spanish-language La Nacion website reported on Saturday morning.
Tourist agency official Miguel Angel Diaz said the three had last been seen climbing Puyehue volcano before stormy conditions developed.
"[They ascented] with only basic mountain climbing equipment and a tent, and for that reason we hope they are secure some place," Angel Diaz said.
Earlier on Saturday, Israel Radio reported the Israeli consul to Chile traveled 1,000 miles from the capital Santiago de Chile to assist police and park rangers in their search. In addition, a rescue team operated by Harel insurance company has also been sent to the area.
Puyehue is located in the remote region of Patagonia in the southern cone of South America.
During the southern hemisphere's summer period which lasts from December to March, the national park's rugged and dramatic terrain attracts thousands of visitors and backpackers, including many Israelis.
