Shomron to head inquiry into General Staff's functioning in Lebanon warBy Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent Former Israel Defense Forces chief of staff Dan Shomron will head an IDF inquiry that will probe the functioning of the General Staff during the Lebanon war. The General Staff held a discussion Tuesday to discuss interim findings from the war inquiries. The forum has been meeting for the past three days, and will continue to meet next week. Final conclusions will be formulated by December. On Monday, the forum was presented with the findings of the investigation into the July 14 Hezbollah missile strike on an Israel Navy vessel in which four soldiers were killed and several others wounded. Although the findings criticize the functioning of the commanders on the vessel, no measures have been taken against those involved. IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz asked the team to further investigate several aspects of the strike before he decides whether to take additional action. On Sunday, Major General Yoram Yair (res.) presented findings from the investigation into the functioning of regular division in the Galilee during the war. Yair sharply criticized the fact that Division 91's flaws became apparent only after the war broke out. Yair maintained that the entire IDF did not internalize that a war was taking place, and not just a routine military operation. According to Yair, the war was therefore not managed with specific aims and targets. |
