Turkish PM Erdogan hospitalized for fall in blood sugar level

By Reuters

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was admitted to hospital on Tuesday after his blood sugar level fell, his spokesman Akif Beki said.

"There is no cause for concern," Beki said in televised remarks outside the hospital.

Erdogan, 52, had been due to address members of his ruling center-right Justice and Development Party (AKP) in parliament. The meeting was cancelled.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, who is also deputy prime minister and number two in the AKP hierarchy, told reporters doctors had told Erdogan to rest.

Erdogan, a former professional soccer player, is physically fit and follows an active regime that includes a lot of foreign travel. In the past few weeks alone, he has visited the United States, Britain and Saudi Arabia.

A pious Muslim, Erdogan usually fasts during the holy month of Ramadan which ends next weekend.

He was briefly admitted to hospital in April after suffering a muscular spasm.
