Israeli, Palestinian officials meet to discuss Rafah crossing

By Avi Issacharoff, Haaretz Correspondent

Israeli and Palestinian officials met on Tuesday in Jerusalem to discuss opening the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt.

The meeting was attended by high ranking officials on both sides, including Palestinian Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat, Defense Ministry officials Barch Spiegel and Hagai Alon and U.S. representatives Dick Jones and Keith Dayton.

The Palestinian delegation described the meeting as being 'very positive.' They asked government representatives to leave the crossing open during the Muslim holiday of Ramadan.

The crossing, which has remained largely shut since the kidnapping of Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit some two months ago, was opened on Saturday allowing 10,000 Palestinians to cross.
