Gunmen fire on Lebanese army post near border with Syria

By The Associated Press

Gunmen opened fire on a Lebanese army post near Lebanon's northern border with Syria overnight after smugglers were arrested there, the state-run National News Agency said Friday.

The shooting was the first such incident since Lebanese army troops deployed last month along the Lebanon-Syria border to control crossings and prevent the smuggling of weapons to Hezbollah.

There was no immediate word that those arrested were running arms to the
guerrilla group. The route is also used for smuggling illegal loads of fuel, cigarettes and electronics from Syria into Lebanon.

One soldier was lightly wounded in the attack, and was being treated at a
hospital, NNA reported.

The gunmen opened fire on the outpost in the Wadi Khaled area, about one kilometer from the Lebanon-Syria border, after army troops arrested several smugglers in the area.

Troops detained 12 suspects after the shooting, the agency said.
