Five Killed in Weekend Road Accidents Including Teen on Way Home From Funeral

A 16-year-old girl was killed and several other people injured Friday afternoon, in a traffic accident at the Hukuk junction northwest of Lake Kinneret.

The teenager, from Menahemia in the Jordan Valley, was traveling home from her grandfather's funeral at Moshav Elifelet, in the Upper Galilee, in a car driven by her brother. According to police, a vehicle turning in the junction did not yield to their approaching car.

In the resulting crash, the girl, seated in the back seat, was killed instantly, while her brother and sister sustained moderate injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was slightly injured. The accident is being investigated by the police.

Yesterday morning, two men, Ronen Abu Ramed, 26, from Sha'ar Efraim, and Azem Saada, 27, from Peki'in, were killed in an accident on road 866, near Amirim, in the Galilee.

Police said Saada, who was driving a car, attempted a U-turn in the section between Amirim and Kibbutz Parod, blocking the way of Abu Ramed, who was riding his motorcycle in the opposite lane.

Saada's wife, believed to be in her 30s, and their three-month-old son both suffered serious injuries and were taken by helicopter to Rambam Hospital in Haifa. A grandmother, a woman in her 60s who was also in the car, suffered serious injuries as well and was taken to Sieff Hospital in Safed. Police investigators were still at the scene last night, and the road was closed in both directions for several hours.

The investigators were at pains to stress that Abu Ramed did not appear connected to a group of motorcyclists who were reported to have been driving dangerously in the area a short while before the accident occurred, saying that the collision appeared to be caused entirely by the actions of the driver of the automobile.

Elsewhere, two people were killed and two injured yesterday in an accident nearby the Shavei Shomron settlement in the West Bank. An initial police investigation found that a Palestinian truck had crashed into two Israeli vehicles, for an as of yet unknown reason.
