Cinema Jenin, one of many Palestinian movie theaters that closed during the first intifada in 1987, will reopen this week after 23 years.
Dozens of guests from the Palestinian Authority, Israel and Europe were invited to tomorrow's opening night gala, including Bianca Jagger, a human rights activist once married to musician Mick Jagger.
The gala will also inaugurate the three-day Jenin Film Festival. Cinema Jenin was the largest and grandest movie theater in the territories when it opened in the 1960s, screening films every day of the week.
During its 23-year haitus, the building began falling apart, but was rescued when Ismael Khatib, a resident of Jenin's refugee camp, joined forces with German director Marcus Vetter to raise funds for its renovation.
The two met when Vetter made a prize-winning documentary in 2008 about Khatib's decision to donate the organs of his son, who was killed by Israeli soldiers, to both Israeli and Palestinian children.
