The spot that generated buzz and fierce debate finally airs, minus one line.
The SodaStream ad featuring Scarlett Johansson that has generated both buzz and controversy finally aired during the Super Bowl on Sunday – minus the one line that originally got the spot banned.
Fox last week rejected the 33-second ad that ended with the words “Sorry, Coke and Pepsi,” a direct shot at the Israeli soda company's competitors – SodaStream's second such attack on the two major Super Bowl sponsors in as many years (last year's spot was also rejected at first for the same reason).
That hasn't stopped the original version from going viral, though, garnering more than 9.7 million views on YouTube as of Monday.
The partnership between Johansson and SodaStream has also gone viral, so to speak, prompting the actress to cut ties with human rights group Oxfam – which opposes trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank, where SodaStream's factory is located – and unleashing a flurry of news stories, blogs, analyses and, of course, memes.
