The cabinet yesterday approved the appointment of Sallai Meridor as Israel's next ambassador to the United States. Meridor will take up his post in December, following the visit to the United States of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Olmert told the cabinet that outgoing Ambassador Danny Ayalon enjoyed a "very successful term" and had garnered "most impressive achievements, created excellent personal relationships with the heads of the American administration, and won appreciation from the president of the United States, his vice president, the secretary of state, the secretary of defense and the national security advisor." Ayalon next month ends a term of more than four years as envoy in Washington.
