The pigeon economy: growing unemployment in Egypt
Egypt needs enormous resources – huge sums of money and a revamping of its educational system – to pull itself out of a deep unemployment rut.
Egypt has a new growth industry: pigeon-raising. Although there is no official data, estimates suggest more than 40 million pigeons are being raised in poor neighborhoods and on farms just outside of Cairo. Some raise pigeons as a hobby, to fill the empty hours. But most of the pigeons, which are sold as food, provide an additional source of income.
