Journalists are an immodest lot. They think they know best what is important, what's interesting, what people should read and how to make them read it. But a new model has emerged. Several companies, some still at the start-up stage, are trying to determine what Internet users want to read not on the basis of editorial opinion and guesswork but by using formulas, algorithms and databases.
