As if the long-suffering Israeli public didn't have enough troubles, it seems that the heightened demand for pickled cucumbers ahead of the Independence Day holiday has nearly wiped out the pickle offerings on local supermarket shelves. Retail and canning company executives alike confirmed the sad news, but reassured fans of both brined and vinegar varieties that the flow will resume within a few weeks, once this year's crop of pickled cucumbers is put up and shipped out. Part of the problem was with last year's crop - the yield was low, but many of the cukes were too big for their cans.
