Outsourced teachers getting 75% salary
The 7,000 subcontracted workers in the education system, who include teachers, maintenance staff and guards, will be earning only 75% of their usual salary this month. The reason? They're paid by the hour, and they don't get vacation pay, while the school system is on break for the Hanukkah holiday.
One woman, Yelena, a member of the cleaning staff at a Petah Tikva school, said she had no money to give her children for Hanukkah.
The issue of subcontracted workers has been making headlines over the past several weeks after Histadrut Labor Federation chairman Ofer Eini made it a flashpoint and threatened to strike if the government did not directly hire all its subcontracted employees. Negotiations are underway, but no progress has been reported.
