A cover story in the traditionally free-market-friendly magazine signals a new global awareness of growing gaps.

It must have been a nasty surprise for at least some of The Economist's veteran readers, who number among the global economic elite. There, on the prestigious magazine's cover this week, was a picture of a large hand helping a little one to reach fruit on a tree. The title: "True progressivism," and in smaller print, "The new politics of capitalism and inequality.
