Operation Pillar of Defense caught me by surprise. As a resident of Omer, near Be’er Sheva, I’ve been doing this demons’ dance of alarms, explosions and sleeping in the bomb shelter. But I guess it’s like a call-up to reserve duty – you can serve 20 years in the reserves and still be surprised when that brown envelope arrives in the mail. And it never comes at a good time.
