Brig. Gen. Itay Brun will be appointed the next head of research at Military Intelligence, IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz decided earlier this week. The decision is still subject to approval from Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
Brun was selected from a field of three candidates, all of whom are intelligence officers. He is expected to begin work at his new post this summer.
The head of research is widely viewed as the second most important position within Military Intelligence. The unit is responsible for supplying the IDF's intelligence assessment, and the individual in charge of the unit is in constant contact with the civilian leadership.
Responsibilities for the post include frequent appearances before cabinet ministers as well as the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.
Brun, 48, spent most of his military service fulfilling numerous positions at air force intelligence, including head of the research division. He was also the top deputy responsible for intelligence assessments at MI.
In 2006, he was named head of the Dado Center for Interdisciplinary Thinking, a position he has held until now.
Brun will replace Brig. Gen. Yossi Baidatz, who has held the job for the last five years. Baidatz, who is line for a promotion to the rank of major general, is expected to remain in the IDF.
