For Israelis, the image of a black, burned out hull of a bombed passenger bus fills the same role as a photo of the Twin Towers engulfed in smoke and fire does for Americans: it is a satanic symbol of their worst nightmares, a dreaded icon of their most fearful days, a picture of pure evil that remains etched in their minds, no matter how hard they might try to erase it.

Of course, the barbaric murder of innocent Israeli tourists doesn't make your outlook on the situation less grim, but to think that this is like the first domino block to fall is a bit too bleak. Yes, when it is up to war mongerers like John Bolton and half the Israeli Knesset, then we would find ourselves inno time in a destructive Middle East war, but there are other people, other forces in the ME and outside that go a totally different direction. And if there was one thing that Israel could do to help stop the war lovers, it would be to offer sincerely the basic human right of self determination to the Palestinian people by means of opening peace talks on the basis of the many existing agreements (the Arab League, Nuseibah-Ayalon, etc, etc) Israelis should stop denying that the continuation of the occupation is connected to the continuation of Israel as a pariah in the world commnity, that the road blocks in the Westbank are a strong motivation of Arab people to hate Israel. No, it is not an excuse for the sick terror we saw yesterday, but if Israelis thinkl they can improve their security by means of weapons, occupation and war, they are so wrong.
