When Jimmy Carter gave his “malaise speech” in July 1979, the Gallup “satisfaction index” with “the way things are going in the U.S.” stood at a lopsided 11 percent to 84 percent, in favor of the dissatisfied. In Gallup’s most recent poll, published last month, the ratio was somewhat better - 22 percent vs. 77 percent – but much of that famous speech still rings true...
