We've lost: It’s time to think about one state

Where were you in 1942 when Martin Buber, Henrietta Szold, Dr. Judah Magnes, and other like-minded Jews of Mandatory Palestine, with some leading Arab Palestinian notables thought a Bi-national state might be the right solution. The "Old Man" and his mafia killed the idea at the Biltmore Hotel. Then, if you really wanna go back in time, Jabotinsky thought about a Bi-national State, too, that resembled Lebanon, with a Jewish prez, as it were and an Arab vice-prez. If Palestine-Israel is fairly divided with free access to criss-cross between perforated state lines then it can work . The Arab triangle next to the N West Bank and parts of the Galilee ( including Nazareth ) will be part of Palestine , assigning 800,000 Israeli Palestinians the right to chose citizenship or residency in Palestine . Israel can keep some of the periferical settlements ( Paying compensation ) while the remaining would have the right to citizenship or residency in Palestine , The remaining Israeli Palestinians have the right to switch to Palestinian citizenship and maintain permanent residency in Israel . Jerusalem Is shared . Palestinian refugees have the right to settle in Palestine and a few are aloud to be residents of Israel. Open boarders co-existing yet separated . Each will have 90 % majority in their respecting state . The minorities have to be protected and since they exist on both sides its easier to respect . Israelis need to come to realize that the majority of the Palestinian people were maneuvered ( being polite ) into leaving their homes . Its time to rise and accept a fair deal , a new modern version of the 1947 partition plan . If not then it is a weird and ugly one state . The distinction of Citizen and resident has to be clearly defined . I am a Palestinian and my children and grand children will resist until fairness and mutual respect is dealt out .

NOBODY aside from Arabs and the extreme far-left would support a one-state solution. That will end in a Yugoslavia at best, a Rwanda at worst. The best answer is simply to wait. The Jewish birthrate is going to outstrip the Arab birthrate in a few years. Once Arabs become a small minority with no real influence, then we can talk about annexing the WB to Israel.

I used to be in favor of a two state solution, too. What Israel has done for the last 45 + years in building settlements and expropriating land has destroyed that option. For those worried about the Jewish character of such a state, you did this to yourselves by electing leaders who wanted you to have your cake (the land) and eat it too (remaining a Jewish state), with so many Palestineans under Israeli control, this cannot be done in practicality or in reality.

Nothing left to make a Palestinian state from so now just a question of making sure Palestinians don't become second class citizens in the one state.

One question: would the Arabs in the West Bank accept full Israeli citizenship bestowed on them from above by Israel? Israel offered citizenship to the whole of Arab East Jerusalem after annexing it in 1967, and they refused. As for changing the name of the country and stop calling it Israel, do you think most Israelis are more likely to accept that then to accept a full retreat from the West Bank? Do you think your idea is anymore realistic than the two-state proposal?

Good article, It became obvious a two state solution is not going anywhere. One state for all with equal rights is the next logical solution. This should be implemented in stages over a long period of time starting with helping both sides to respect each other and strengthening security and trade.
