It used to be an old Jewish habit to try to understand our surroundings. One reason was curiosity; the other was to figure out whether current events are good for the Jews or not – because this allowed Jews to survive under often very difficult circumstances. The first motivation is certainly laudable; the second reflects good old prudence.

Israel was not passively "placed" in a difficult and volatile corner. The way Israel was established in the first place has to a great extent shaped and perpetuated this volatility and so-called difficulty.

and furthermore, "what's wrong" with the refusal to "share their land" is exactly that: the Palestinians *would* be celebrating the 64th anniversary of their state, but because they refused, waged war, and lost, they have nothing to celebrate.
