Rosh Hashanah greetings.
Greeting cards are passé: Rosh Hashanah goes digital
As with all traditions, there are still some village elders who hold onto the old ways, but the Jewish New Year has gone digital, big-time.

Red Hot Chili Peppers in concert in Tel Aviv
Israelis felt the warmth from the Red Hot Chili Peppers
Many artists only make it to Israel when they are well past their peak and the performances awaken nostalgia but are ultimately disappointing. Not so in this case.

Making sense of it for your kids: Back-to-school shopping and Iran
Contradictory headlines and conflicting opinions of leaders they are supposed to respect are confusing for children. When they turn to their parents to make sense of it all - how are you supposed to do it for a 12-year-old, when you can’t do it for yourself?

Bathing in the Kinneret.
Naked congressman in the Kinneret: criminal, shocking, or simply amusing?
Hearing a politician take responsibility and apologize for skinnydipping feels to Israeli ears as the water of the Kinneret must have felt on Yoder’s skin. Very refreshing.

About this blog
Allison Kaplan Sommer is a veteran journalist and blogger who has covered events in Israel and the Jewish world for The Jerusalem Post, JTA, The Forward. Originally from Rhode Island, the smallest state in the U.S., she reported from New York, Washington DC, and then moved to Israel – another small state - 20 years ago. Today, she lives in Ra'anana with her husband, three children, and trusty minivan. Her blog is part of her ongoing mission to address the question she hears constantly from friends and family abroad: "So what's it really like living in Israel?" She hopes that by chronicling the unique mix of the extraordinary and mundane that makes up the fabric of Israeli life – its routine emergencies – she will come closer to finding the right answer. Her writing offers a window into Israel's culture, politics, gender issues, and always-complex relationship to the Jewish Diaspora and the rest of the world.

Black trailblazers Obama and beauty queen Aynaw to talk about ... Pollard?
Have Israeli leaders co-opted the country's beauty queen to raise the issue of Jonathan Pollard with President Obama because she is Ethiopian? Do they think Obama will reconsider Pollard just because another black person asks him to?
