In the Middle East, good looks trump bad deeds
The behavior of the Assad regime is irrelevant – as long as they look good doing it. These conventionally thin and beautiful and well-dressed wives buff up a leader’s - and by extension, a country’s - image.
We like to tell our kids that looks are superficial, that it’s what inside our hearts and brains that count and will ultimately determine their success in life. When they come home crying that they are being teased by classmates for their freckles, braces, or unfashionable brand of sneakers, we reassure them that as they grow older, these things matter less.
