With an attack on Iran less likely, Israel's leaders add fuel to the media's fire
Senior Haaretz analyst Amos Harel says a recent comment by the U.S. army chief made it clear that Obama has had enough of Netanyahu and Barak's antics. They, however, could still attack just to show they can.

What's the point of Israel's psychological warfare against Iran?
Politicians and the public have been accusing the media of 'wantonness' for their discourse on Iran, but the media is not to blame – the decision-makers are.

Gazans hope Egypt will ease clampdown on smuggling tunnels
One can assume that a quiet understanding will eventually enable the Hamas tunnels to continue operating, taking into account Egypt's security demands and Hamas' financial needs.

Riyad Hijab sworn in June 2012.
Assad's time is running out in Syria
ANALYSIS: The defection of Syrian Prime Minister Riyad Hijab is the most significant of all those who have already deserted the Assad regime. It is a hard slap in the face to the president's prestige and a win for the rebels, especially on a symbolic level.

About this blog
Since my last post with Avi Issacharoff in the MESS Report blog last year, the Middle East has changed immensely. In the wake of the Arab Spring, a new political reality has emerged in the region, one that affects each country individually and has enormous implications on Israel, as well. The two of us have been covering the Middle East, with a focus on politics and security, for more than a decade. Wars have hit, terrorists have struck, peace initiatives have been signed (and often forgotten) and governments have changed hands. The Middle East is a volatile region. To narrow analysis down to one viewpoint is impossible, but to try to find a balance in perspectives is, no matter how often opinions seems to contradict. In this blog, I aim to engage this complex region on a broader scope and to give our readers a balanced and credible picture of the reality in this region. This blog will bring you in-depth analysis, as well as our own personal observations about the region that we live in.

Black trailblazers Obama and beauty queen Aynaw to talk about ... Pollard?
Have Israeli leaders co-opted the country's beauty queen to raise the issue of Jonathan Pollard with President Obama because she is Ethiopian? Do they think Obama will reconsider Pollard just because another black person asks him to?
